Upholstered Headboard

I wanted a headboard for the guest room, so, last week, I decided that I would make one.  I have seen a lot of people make their own,  and it didn’t seem too hard. I already had all of the materials so, again, this project didn’t cost anything. Here’s what I used:

An old cork bulletin board:

And an old comforter:

First, I laid the bulletin board on my dining room table, which is a perfect workspace for this project.  Then, I laid the comforter over the board, and made sure that the grey part of the comforter was the only one in the area to cut.

After I made sure that the whole area covering the board was free of pulls, holes, etc., I marked out where to cut around the edges.

Be sure to use a really good fabric scissor, especially if you are cutting a comforter like I did. It will help speed the cutting process up. Once I finished cutting, I folded the edges over the board.

I cut the excess fabric that was going to be folded on the corners because the staple gun wouldn’t be able to hold it down, plus I needed the back to be as flat and even as possible.  After I folded the corners neatly, I stapled them into the board.

I repeated this on all the corners, then worked on the sides.

It’s important to note that you should be pulling the fabric taught the whole time.  Once all the stapling was done, I flipped it over to reveal my new headboard!

Here it is up in the guest room. I haven’t attached it yet because A). We still have to paint the wall and B). I’m not sure if I want to keep the board vertical or horizontal. I am leaning towards vertical.

I love it! I can’t wait until we paint. This will really pop when the walls are yellow.  There is still so much to do in this room, but this makes a huge difference, I think.
